How Dimensions Unbound Came to Be
Dimensions Unbound originally began in 1983 under the title Parallel Worlds. The original premise was simple: a teenage boy moves into a new house and discovers a mysterious box in his basement that transports him to alternate realities.
A few days after I started writing, my friends Brad and Todd came over. They asked where I had been hiding, since they hadn't seen me in a while. I told them I’d been working on a new story and handed Todd the manuscript—warning him it was just a rough draft that still needed spelling and grammar fixes.
After finishing it, Todd looked up and asked, "Well, where are we in it?"
When I told him they weren't in the story, he smirked and said, "Well, some friend you are."
I promised to rewrite it to include them. I shifted the setting to a run-down shack just outside of town and swapped the basement box for an outhouse. Why an outhouse? Because, as I told my friends, "That's what you actually see around here—and nobody would ever expect one to be massive on the inside."
A week later, they asked if we could bring another friend into the narrative. I agreed immediately—the three-character dynamic felt incomplete, and adding a fourth gave us the perfect group.
Over time, the title evolved from Parallel Worlds to The Time Box, then The Box of Time, before finally becoming Dimensions Unbound. As the years went on and we all went our separate ways, I decided to rename the characters, so they no longer reflected real people. That is how Nathan Brooks, Andrew Brooks, and Michael King were born.
