Ch. 13: The Exit Spiral

Fox stood in the basin, facing the snake. It wasn’t lunging—it was watching. Its body coiled around the clearing like a living perimeter, obsidian scales catching the filtered light.
He raised his voice. “You came through a door. You don’t belong here.”
The snake’s head tilted. No sound. Just presence.
I remember you.
Fox stepped forward. “You remember everyone.”
Not everyone carries the key.
Fox glanced at his bracelet. “This isn’t a weapon.”
It is to me.
The snake surged.
Nathan burst through the brush. “Fox!”
Michael followed, eyes locked on the basin. “There—he’s in with it.”
Andrew skidded to a stop. “Bracelets ready?”
Nathan nodded. “We go in together.”
They charged.
Fox dodged the strike, rolling across the stone. The snake’s body shifted—its coils forming walls, its tail blocking exits.
“You’re not a room,” Fox shouted. “You’re a parasite!”
I am memory. I am the shape of fear.
Fox raised his bracelet. “Then fear this.”
The others arrived.
Nathan grabbed Fox’s arm. “We’ve got you!”
Michael swung a flare stick. “Back off!”
Andrew shouted, “Bracelets—link!”
They clasped wrists.
Fox whispered, “Exit protocol. Return to hub.”
The snake recoiled.
Light flared.
They landed hard in the outside room’s clearing.
The snake was gone.
The forest was quiet.
The children emerged from the trees.
The girl with the scar stepped forward. “You survived.”
Fox nodded. “Barely.”
She handed him a carved token—a spiral with a broken center.
“For when you forget,” she said.
Fox took it. “Thank you.”
Back in the hub, the door sealed behind them.
The corridor stretched on—silent, endless.
Nathan looked at Fox. “You okay?”
Fox nodded. “It wasn’t just hunting. It was remembering.”
Michael adjusted his bracelet. “We still haven’t found the control room.”
Andrew looked down the hallway. “You think it’s real?”
Fox stared at the doors.
“I think it’s waiting.”
They walked on.
